REPACKAGED
CONVERSE CREATE AT HOME SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT
Upcycling | Pattern Making | Footwear Construction
Converse reached out through Instagram to highlight me as an independent creator. Their proposal was a paid spotlight to focus on my process of making a Chuck Taylor out of unconventional upcycled and/or sustainable materials in less than a week. My deliverables included footage to introduce myself, step by step video documentation of my process, still images of my final creation, workspace, and materials, and a Q&A. The focus was on my outlook on sustainability and my creative process in the context of pandemic Stay At Home measures.
The final design of my upcycled Chuck was motivated by the flood of deliveries with many brick and mortar stores closed. Packaging has now become its own raw material that could be repurposed in new ways. My process from clarifying the brief to handing off final deliverables was completed in four days. The assets were then shared through the Converse social media account as part of their Create At Home campaign.
LET’S LEARN HOW THINGS ARE MADE
SO THEY CAN BE UNMADE
Key learnings
Establish expectations early—clarifying the time, fidelity, and deliverable expectations with the Converse team helped me pivot early from complex project ideas to a well-scoped one.
Process documentation shouldn’t become a distraction—although one of my deliverables for this project was video documentation, I was initially obsessing over recording every step when I would have saved time and energy by pinpointing the most important moments to capture.
Identify available resources to improve efficiency—after taking up some of my short timeline on clarifications and unnecessary documentation, I needed to quickly pivot to asking a friend for video editing assistance in order to complete my deliverables on time.
